Il a ausculté l’homme, éprouvé l’obscur et l’ignorance, qu’il reconnaît, à la pratique de la danse, comme la matière première et dernière des tâtonnements du corps, donc de l’esprit. De pièce en pièce (Step in, Breakthrough, Behind me), entre passé et devenir, Michel Kouakou fait de la danse une terra riservata appelant un au-delà de soi. Abordant subtilement l’espace, Behind me tente d’agencer un espace attentif à la possibilité de se frayer à tout moment des voies toujours plus harmonieuses. À l’Afrique divisée et freinée dans ses élans, qui expose le corps des femmes et des enfants à tous les dangers, il adresse sa danse, comme une phrase aventureuse et lumineuse, tout enveloppée d'elle-même, pleine de son équilibre et de sa paix, de son poids et de sa mesure, de son rythme et de son temps. Pariant que les gestes ont toute chance de tenir un jour contre toute tentation de chaos.

He has sounded out human beings, felt the darkness and the ignorance which he recognises from his practice of dance as the raw material and final product of the gropings of the body, and thus the spirit. From piece to piece (“Step in”, “Breakthrough”, “Behind me”), between past and future, Michel Kouakou turns dance into a terra reservata conjuring up the beyond. Subtly tackling space, “Behind me” tries to create a realm open to the possibility of changing paths at any time, striving towards ever-greater harmony. It is to a divided and hobbled Africa, one which exposing the bodies of women and children to all dangers, that he dedicates his dance, like an adventurous and brilliant sentence, full of itself, its balance and its peace, its weight and its measure, its rhythm and its time. Making a bet that movement will one day stand a good chance of resisting every temptation of chaos.
