What can dance offer when confronted with extreme violence ? “Still feel the presence” will probably mark an important moment in the career of Nkosinathi Lawrence Mncube by its ambition to pass from private revolt to the choreography of outrage and violation. On the edge of a wounded memory, this second panel of a triptych evokes the sexual abuse he suffered as a child. Probing the silence, chasing off resignation, he draws from his experience the strength of a choreographic assertion, intensely emotional, elegant and eloquent. A rite of passage between various states, between different layers of intimacy and revelation, his dance has the force of an accusation and the modest sobriety of a revelation. Starting out serene, plain and straightforward, nevertheless creating a commotion by tackling the unspeakableness of this senseless trauma, dance recovers its cathartic power in this piece.
